Wrinkle free with Botox?! A brief history of Botox and its cosmetic uses

Feb 25, 2025

Botox has become a household name in the world of aesthetics, helping millions achieve a more youthful, refreshed appearance.  I definitely use Botox religiously, to keep my forehead and frown lines smooth. But what exactly is Botox, and how did it become such a popular cosmetic treatment? In this blog post, we’ll explore the history of Botox, its uses in aesthetics, and the different brands available on the U.S. market.

A Brief History of Botox

Botox is derived from botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Though the toxin is known to cause botulism, scientists discovered its potential medical benefits in the 1970s.

In 1989, the FDA approved Botox (produced by Allergan) for the treatment of eye muscle disorders, such as strabismus (crossed eyes) and blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking). Its cosmetic potential was discovered when patients treated for these conditions noticed a reduction in facial wrinkles. By 2002, the FDA officially approved Botox for cosmetic use to reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Since then, it has gained widespread popularity and expanded its indications.  Botox is currently the most popular non-surgical treatment in the US.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox gets injected directly into the targeted muscles, such as those causing frown lines. Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to those muscles, preventing them from contracting. By doing so, Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, leading to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. The effects typically last three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns. On a cellular level, Botox inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions.

Cosmetic Uses of Botox

Common cosmetic applications of Botox include:

  • Forehead Lines – Reducing horizontal wrinkles on the forehead.
  • Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines) – Softening the vertical lines between the eyebrows.
  • Crow’s Feet – Diminishing fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Bunny Lines – Smoothing out wrinkles on the sides of the nose.
  • Lip Flip – Enhancing the upper lip by relaxing the muscles around it.
  • Chin Dimpling – Reducing the appearance of a pebbly or dimpled chin.
  • Jawline Slimming – Softening the masseter muscles for a more contoured jawline.
  • Neck Bands – Reducing platysmal bands for a smoother neck appearance.

Botox and Other Neurotoxin Brands in the U.S.

While Botox by Allergan remains the most well-known brand, several other botulinum toxin products are available in the U.S., each offering slightly different formulations and characteristics:

  • Botox (Allergan) – FDA approved in 2002 – The original botulinum toxin approved for both medical and cosmetic use.
  • Dysport (Galderma) – FDA approved in 2009 – Known for its ability to spread more easily over larger areas.
  • Xeomin (Merz Pharmaceuticals) – FDA approved in 2011 – A “naked” form of botulinum toxin that contains no additives and less accessory proteins reducing the risk of antibody resistance.
  • Jeuveau (Evolus) – FDA approved in 2019 – Marketed as “#NewTox,” it is specifically designed for aesthetic purposes.
  • Daxxify (Revance Therapeutics) – FDA approved in 2022 – A newer botulinum toxin with a longer-lasting effect (potentially up to six - nine months) compared to other brands.
